I have been working on myself for almost ten years now. I study, I research, I read, I listen, on all the fields that touch psychology, sociology and recently theology. And one thing jumped out at me from the beginning: the number of people who say "oh yes, I know that" or "yes, yes it's true" but who don't apply these truths in their lives.
I quickly realized that in reality no one is an exception. So I decided to understand why in my life there were truths that despite their real impact had not become my truths.
The first thing, quite easy to observe, is that every day I'm confronted with many different truths, coming from my family, my friends, my teachers, social networks... Most of the time, I don't even take the time to assimilate them, to integrate them into my thought pattern. And that's even when I think a truth could really change my life! Why is that?
For a truth to become my truth, it takes more than willpower. It takes real investment and work on oneself. Our truths, the ones we already have, were not created in a few seconds, but over many years! Our education, mainly, has helped us to choose the truths that suit us. Adding a new truth to our system of thought is easier than changing one we already have. And it's often because of this that we resist transforming a truth into our truth.
So, what can we do? When we've found a truth that suits us, we can write it down, we can talk about it with someone else, we can research it. Next, it's important to understand whether this truth replaces an old one or adds to a group of truths. If it replaces an old truth: we need to become aware of the old truth, identify how the new truth is better, and how the new truth will influence our lives.
Unfortunately, it's not in a day that a truth is replaced or implemented in our lives, because we first have to mentally understand it, and then use it in our lives with our thoughts, actions and words. How do we know when the truth has become our truth? When we and others see it through our lives.
Maybe today, instead of saying: "Yes, it's true, I know that! " you could try to see how you can integrate this truth into your life, so that it becomes yours.
